Update from Chairman, Patrick Orr

Welcome to the Kenya Society! It’s good to have a new revitalised website – more reflective of our Society and our growing and stable membership. It has been quite a journey since those far off days in 1989 when Sally Kosgei, then High Commissioner in London, sought to harness the dynamism of a rapidly growing Kenya diaspora as well as the affection and loyalty of those British expatriates who had returned from Kenya and wanted to keep their links with the country they loved – and in most cases were reluctant to leave. Sally started the tradition of the Society’s Summer Party at the residence which has been supported by Kenya High Commissioners to the UK ever since and endures to this day as the Society’s main event of the year.

We have had some wonderful occasions – even historic moments. The reception for Jaramogi Oginga Odinga just before he died; the lunch held for President Moi in 1994 – and, indeed, for other political leaders over the years. The President of the Republic, Uhuru Kenyatta, is our Patron.

The Society was wonderfully served by chairmen such as Sir John Johnson and John Edwards. And, of course, by our outstanding Hon Secretary, Primrose Stobbs, who gave so much of her time and energies to keep the Society moving ahead.

And, our Society has evolved. But we still need an injection of fresh ideas that can only come from revamping our constitution – unchanged since our formation. This process, under the guidance of Sir Jeffrey James, former High Commission to Kenya, Juvenal Shiundu, Deputy Chairman of our Society, and Pamela Chesire, our current Hon Secretary, is now underway.

Their recommendations will be put before the Annual General Meeting next year – and they will probably include suggestions for a Society that is prepared to tackle the more difficult subjects in Kenya Life and speakers who can articulate new and fresh subjects and ideas for discussion and debate.

We invite you to join with us as we plan for the future. You are so welcome.

Karibuni wote!
